May 10, 2005 — The 2005 Social Studies Fair is to be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 11 in Emancipation Garden. Annie Smith, St. Thomas-St. John District Social Studies Coordinator, said in a release, "This year's theme focuses on economics and has been appropriately titled, "Economics Affects My Life."
Smith said that participating students will demonstrate their knowledge of world currency through various displays of monies from around the world. Students will also identify the countries being represented in their displays and the use of conversion charts to indicate values of currency from one country to another.
Participating schools include: Charlotte Amalie and Ivanna Eudora Kean High Schools, Addelita Cancryn Junior High School and Bertha C. Boschulte Middle Schools, Ulla Muller, Michael Kirwan, Peace Corps and E. Benjamin Oliver Elementary Schools, as well Sts. Peter and Paul and the Prophecy School. Projects will be judges in two (2) categories: individual and group.
An added feature of the fair will include honoring Arnel Benjamin, as the 2004-05 Most Dedicated Parent of the Year. "It is a distinct privilege for the district to recognize Mrs. Benjamin as a dedicated public school parent and community activist,"Smith said. "Mrs. Benjamin serves this community as an involved parent holding memberships in various PTAs over the years and as a volunteer with the Junior Firefighters," she added. "We are truly fortunate to have parents in our community such as Mrs. Benjamin who extend themselves above and beyond their realm of responsibility to ensure that our children's lives are filled with wholesome activities that aid in their becoming productive citizens. If the adage, it takes a village to raise a child is indeed a true statement, Mrs. Benjamin is our honorary villager."
