UVI's Forty-first Commencement Ceremonies Set May 14-15
The University of the Virgin Islands will confer approximately 350 degrees at its 41st annual commencement ceremonies this weekend on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. The St. Thomas ceremony is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, while the St. Croix commencement will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 15. UVI Nursing Students to Receive Pins on St. Thomas and St. Croix
Ten students from the University of the Virgin Islands will receive nursing pins at ceremonies that symbolize their transition into the nursing profession. Ceremonies are set at 5:30 p.m. today (Thursday, May 12) on the St. Thomas campus and at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 13, at the Sweeney Police Pavilion in Kingshill on St. Croix. Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company to Perform May 14 at the Reichhold Center
The Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company will perform at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 14. The program will feature spectacular court dances of Chinese dynasties as well as contemporary works fusing classical Chinese dance and ballet. It will be complemented by dazzling costumes, original music and multi-media designs. Company members will also conduct a student residencies and a Master Dance Class on Friday, May 13. Tickets are available at Modern Music (both locations), Parrot Fish, Krystal Gifts Galore, Connections on St. John, the UVI Bookstore and from Ticketing Services at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. Final UVI Strategic Plan Town Hall Meeting Set May 18 on St. Croix
Virgin Islands residents are invited to help shape the future of the University of the Virgin Islands at UVI-sponsored town hall meetings in May. Meetings have already been held on St. John and St. Thomas. The final session is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, at the St. George Botanical Garden on St. Croix. The public is invited to share views and opinions, which will aid in the development of UVI's Strategic Plan for 2012. Refreshments will be served. For details call 693-1100.
UVI Invites Public to Join in Exploration of Revised Organic Act
In commemoration of the anniversary of the Revised Organic Act of 1954, the University of the Virgin Islands has established an Ad Hoc Committee to encourage examination of the Act. The committee will promote a series of events throughout the months of May and June aimed at examining the Revised Organic Act in light of its 50th anniversary. "UVI is conducting a public information series in fulfillment of its mission to assist the community in higher education and its vision to facilitate social and economic transformation in the territory," said UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. 'The King and I' Comes to the Reichhold May 28 and 29
Three performances of the Rogers and Hammerstein Broadway musical "The King and I" are scheduled at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on May 28 and 29. The musical — based on the Margaret Landon book "Anna and the King of Siam," with music and lyrics by the renowned Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and choreography by Jerome Robbins — will be performed at 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29. A children's matinee is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 28.
A cast and orchestra of some 75 performers has been organized for the production, according to Producer Austin A. Venzen. Venzen is a UVI associate professor of music. Lorna Freeman-Dennis, a UVI vocal instructor, is the female lead. Drew Bowers will play the King. Bowers has performed with the UVI Concert Band. The quartet Quattor Novi serves as presenter for the production. Elvira O. Green, former music professor and director of the UVI Choir, is the co-producer and stage director. Tickets are: $40 (Section A); $30 (Section B); and $20 (Section C). Ticket outlets are: the Reichhold Center Box Office, the UVI Bookstore, Nisky Pharmacy, Modern Music (Havensight) and V.I. Bridal & Tuxedo Center (Tutu Park). Tickets for the matinee are $15 for children and $25 for adults. The production is funded in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
