Global Leaders Institute Continues With Lineup of Speakers on Monday

May 19, 2005 – Edward Thomas, chief executive officer and president of the West Indian Co., Ltd., will be the featured speaker at a lecture titled "Global Tourism: The Cruise Ship Industry." The lecture is part of a series of workshops, round-table discussions, forums and field trips being held as part of the University of the Virgin Islands Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders in the Caribbean, a release from UVI said. The lecture will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. on Monday, in the Chase Auditorium, room B110, at UVI's St. Thomas campus.
The two-week institute, which opened Tuesday, is designed to prepare university juniors, seniors and first-year graduates for global leadership roles. The theme for this year's program is "Managing Global Challenges in the 21st Century." Fifty students from universities and colleges throughout the Caribbean and the United States are participating. Along with Monday's lecture, the public is invited to attend the African Forum, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday in Chase Auditorium. The topic is "Profiles and Perspectives on Development in a Global Environment." The speakers will be UVI professors Ededet Iniama, Yegin Habtes, Hossanna Solomon, Robert Nicholls and Solomon Kabuka. Kabuka is the institute's director. Also presenting will be Dr. Chi Archibong, a professor of management at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.
The public is also invited to the World Forum from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25, in UVI's Sports and Fitness Center. The World Forum's topic will be "Is the United Nations a Viable Option for Small States' Development in the 21st Century." Presenters will be Robert Millette, director of the Global Studies Institute at Lincoln University and Ambassador-at-Large for Grenada; USVI External Affairs Representative Carlyle Corbin; Carlyle Rogers, deputy director of Financial Services Commission in Anguilla and an alumnus of the Summer Institute, and Archibong.
