Students Win Prizes for Essays on Values

0

May 22, 2005 – Dozens of public high school students walked away with hefty cash prizes from the Virgin Islands' fifth annual Laws of Life essay contest. Ceremonies for the winners were held this weekend on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
The character-education program is a joint effort by the Peter Gruber Foundation and the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands; it is funded entirely by Globalvest Management Company. It is designed to get students thinking about their life values and expressing their thoughts in writing.
Students at St. Croix Central High School, Ivanna Eudora Kean High School and Charlotte Amalie High School participated in the contest this year. English teachers guided the students through the process, grading the finished products as a writing assignment. The essays, minus the student's names, were then evaluated by a panel of judges comprised of distinguished members of the community.
Prizes were awarded in each grade level in each school, for a total of more than $12,000 worth of student prizes. First place in each grade is $500; second place, $250; third place, $150. Three students in each grade at each school also received honorable mention prizes of $50. Teachers of first- to third-place students also received cash awards of $250, $150 and $100 respectively.
Applauded by family, friends, teachers, and education officials, St. Thomas students received their prizes Saturday at a ceremony at St. Peter Greathouse, and Central High School students received their awards Sunday at St. George Village Botanical Gardens.
