May 27, 2005 – A young group of rookies are at the St. Croix Tennis Club on Memorial Day weekend trying to earn a spot on the four-man team that will travel to Costa Rica to compete in Zone 4 Davis Cup competition in July.
The V.I. Tennis Association has been sponsoring this qualifier for last seven years. The team did not do well last year, ending up in the next to the last spot at Zone 4. However, there have been times that the team has made it all the way through the Zone 4 competition up to Zone 3. The team has to make it through Zone 1 to get into the world class complection.
Association official Bruce Way was upbeat about the Virgin Islands chances this year with the team being so young.
One veteran who will be probably returning is Eugene Highfield. He was not able to make the qualifier because of scheduling problems. However, the association can make him part of the team based on passed performances. The other three members of last year's team John Richards, Albert Richards, and Kristopher Elien are not competing this year.
