June 3, 2005 – Senate President Lorraine L. Berry on Monday extended condolences to the family and friends of former St. John Administrator William Lomax, who passed away last week. Berry said William Lomax's life was one of effervescent service and goodwill. "I realize that Mr. Lomax's passing bears a significant loss for his family and friends, church family and the entire Virgin Islands community."
"The Virgin Islands has lost a political giant," she said. His contributions to the Virgin Islands, especially on St. John as an educator and the St. John Administrator, will etch his name in the annals of V.I. history."
The Senate President noted that in her numerous interactions with Mr. Lomax, she always remembered his benevolent and gracious manner, saying that these were "characteristics that I am sure he shared with everyone he came in contact with."
"Because of the type of person he was," she said, "his life will forever be cemented in the minds of those whom he touched on his journey here with us."
"In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, the purpose of life is not to be happy, it is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well. This is a testimony to the life of William Lomax," added the senate president.
"My family, the members and staff of the 26th Legislature of the Virgin Islands join me in extending heartfelt sympathies to those who mourn the passing of William Lomax. May God's infinite love and tender mercies extend to all who mourn Mr. Lomax and may their grief be assuaged by the knowledge that their loss is shared by all who knew this gracious gentleman," Berry concluded.
