June 9, 2005 — Nine months after stepping in to fill the vacancy left when former U.S. Attorney David Nissman resigned his post, Anthony J. Jenkins was confirmed by the United States Senate as the U.S. Attorney for the Virgin Islands. The position is the top federal law enforcement post in the territory.
The confirmation took place Wednesday, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's office.
"I am looking forward to continuing to do good work fighting crime and enforcing federal laws on behalf of the United States and the people of the Virgin Islands," Jenkins was quoted as saying.
Jenkins served as acting U.S. attorney since August 20, 2004.
He has been a federal prosecutor for more than 15 years in the Virgin Islands and the Northern District of Florida, where he primarily prosecuted drug offenses. He moved to the Virgin Islands in 2000, when he began working as an assistant U.S. attorney on St. Thomas.
Starting in September 2002, he served as the criminal chief for the U.S. attorney's office. He also served as the managing assistant U.S. attorney in the St. Thomas' division prior to being appointed criminal chief. From January 2001 to April 2002, he served as the lead Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) attorney in the Virgin Islands.
Prior to his federal service, Jenkins worked as an assistant state prosecutor in Jacksonville, Fla. During his tenure there, he served as the deputy director of the Juvenile and Special Assault Division, before being promoted to chief prosecutor of the state attorney's office in Clay County, Fla.
He has an undergraduate degree from Troy State University, where he graduated with high honors, and he received his law degree from Mercer University School of Law in 1984. He is a member of the Florida State Bar.
Prior to his legal career, Jenkins served in the U.S. Army, where he received the Army Commendation Medal, the announcement stated.
