Local Woodturners to Attend National Symposium

0

July 14, 2005 – The Virgin Islands Resource Conservation & Development Council Inc. is sponsoring local woodturners to participate in the upcoming 19th Annual American Association of Woodturners Symposium. According to a press release from VI RC&D, the association will help local woodturners increase their knowledge, marketability, and skills, and help them pass along their craft to future generations. They said that woodturning is becoming a dying art in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Most of our local woodturners are at retirement age and would like to share their knowledge and skills with V.I. youths who are interested in learning their craft. The Woodturners Symposium will be held at the Overland Park Convention Center in Overland Park, Kansas, from July 21-25.
Woodturning is the process of creating wooden art, furniture, utensils and other objects using tools, lathes, and other equipment. At the symposium, eight local woodturners will receive invaluable instruction on various woodturning techniques, network with other woodturners from across the U.S., and showcase their creations and have them auctioned for the association's educational fund. The V.I. woodturners are Carol Spanner, Bien Brignoni, Raphael Berrios, Rodger Nickell, and Daniil "Amatsyahoo" Heywood-Landers from St. Croix; and Alford Henry, Afreeka Southwell, and William Johnson from St. Thomas. They will be able to choose from symposiums highlighting many different types and styles of woodturning, peruse an instant gallery of arts and crafts from across the country, and attend the largest woodturning tradeshow in the world.
This project was made possible through an economic action grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service International Institute of Tropical Forestry.
