Aug. 1, 2005 – Services will be held on Friday, August 5, 2005 for Hermenegildo Martinez, 87, also known as "Gildo", who died on Thursday, July 28, at the Embracing Hospice Care facility in Snellville, Georgia, after a brief illness.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2005, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Nuestra Senora del Carmen Catholic Church in Culebra, Puerto Rico. Services will be held on Friday, August 5, at 3 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at the Culebra Municipal Cemetery.
In 1944 Gildo opened his first grocery store located in Kronprindsens Gade where he served the people of the area for 12 years. In 1956 he moved his family to Contant 7B-15 near Soto Town where he and his wife operated Martinez Self-Service until 1980 when he retired and moved to his birthplace of Culebra, Puerto Rico.
He was an Army veteran and the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy in World War II, and other awards.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Paula G. Martinez; children: Sonia M. Greaux, Luz A. Moron, Paula M. Buice and Gildo A. Martinez; sisters: Amelia Barbosa, Concha Rivera and Julia Martinez. Other survivors are grandchildren: Roland H. Greaux II, Christopher G. Moron, Andrea Buice, Robert G. Moron II, Melissa Greaux White and Ashlee Martinez; great-grandchildren, Dylan H. White, Deven J. Moron and Brayden H. White; and other relatives and friends.
