Sept. 10, 2005 – Schneider Regional Medical Center employees have rallied to the call to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina in America's Gulf Coast.
In partnership with the American Red Cross of the Virgin Islands, Schneider Regional has set up a "Katrina Relief Fund" at the hospital on St. Thomas and the Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center on St. John. Employees and hospital volunteers who contribute to the fund will have their contribution matched dollar-for-dollar by Schneider Regional, according to a press release from Schneider Regional Medical Center.
Rodney E. Miller Sr., president and CEO of Schneider Center, began the fundraising drive this week with a personal contribution of $500 and encouraged local physicians to match that amount.
"Because of the huge scale of devastation and the strong role healthcare providers are being asked to play, we have set up this fund with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the American Red Cross, which is leading the drive for relief efforts in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama," said Miller, who is from Monroe, Louisiana.
Since the money is needed immediately for Katrina relief efforts, Schneider Regional staff is urged to make all donations by September 23, to Ms. Carolyn Barry, supervisor of hospital cashiers at the Schneider Hospital, or Luciah Hedrington, administrative officer at the Keating Smith Center, the press release said.
Schneider Regional will present its final check to the American Red Cross of the Virgin Islands by September 30. The Schneider Regional Katrina Fund is capped at $10,000.
