Marine Golf Outing Attracts Record Number of Participants

Oct. 2, 2005 -Technology might help a golfer playing Carambola Golf Course keep track of Mother Nature, but it doesn't stop Mother Nature from having her way. John Reid kept checking the radar weather on his cell phone as he played in the St. Croix Marine Corps Association Toys for Tots Golf Tournament Sunday.
But he, and the other golfers, could not avoid the fact that the rains came in hard. The tournament had to be called after participants had finished only 12 holes.
But human spirit prevailed in the Carambola club house as the event finished pretty much as planned.
Organizer Carl Gotts said it was a record year as 102 golfers took part in the event in its 10th year.
Gail Shearer, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) executive director, thanked those participating in the event. She said, "You are showing children that someone cares."
She added that events like this took some of the burden of constant fundraising from organizations like CASA.
The event raises funds for the purchase of Christmas presents for such charities as the Women's Coalition, CASA, the St. Croix Shrine Club, Angel Tree, and others.
This year's event also honored Marine Lance Cpl. Shane Goldman, who lost his life in Iraq.
His father George "Scooter" Goldman said a few words. He said the good people of St. Croix had helped him bear the tragedy.
Since everyone did not get to play all the holes, special prizes for longest drive and closest to the pin were not awarded.
However, teams scores were calculated over the 12 holes and awards were presented.
The first place team consisted of Frank Duggan, Roger White, Brian Romine, and Biv Turvo. The second place team was Greg and Coral Hamilton, and Alex and Aaron Pelovitz. The third place team was John Reid, Rod Graci, Mike Smith and Don Buchanan.
Those contributing to the event included Kendrick's Restaurant, Gold Worker, Seaborne Airlines, Bacchus, Sion Farms Dry Cleaner, Baci Duty Free, Rum Runners Restaurant, Nelthropp-Low Jewelry, Big Beards Adventure Tours, Bombay Restaurant, Gold Shop, Head Quarters Styling Salon, Steele's Smokes and Sweets, Kicks, Case Place, S.C.U.B.A., Schooner Bay Market, Gallows Bay Hardware, Duggan's Reef Restaurant, Just-N-Case, Golden Rail, Morning Glory Coffee and Tea, Reef Golf Course, Monique's Beauty Studio, Computer Solutions, Dive Experience, and Progressive Veterinary Clinic.
