Oct. 3, 2005 — This year's 18th and 19th homicides on St. Croix were reported over the weekend.
According to police reports, officers responded to a report of gunshots at about 11:30 p.m. Friday at the D. Hamilton Jackson Housing Community. Officers found a 16-year-old boy lying face down with several apparent gunshot wounds. He was later identified as Kareem Crump, a resident of Estate Richmond.
Sgt. Thomas Hannah, a V.I. Police Department spokesman, said Crump was taken to Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital by emergency personnel. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Crump was the 18th homicide on St. Croix and 34th in the Virgin Islands this year.
Hannah said there have been no arrests in this incident, but police are actively investigating.
Fewer than two hours later officers were called to respond to reports concerning an altercation at Bongo's Bar on Company Street in Christiansted.
Officers there found that Alan Reid, 50, had suffered severe trauma to his face, according to Hannah. Hannah said he did not know if the trauma was caused by a bottle, a fist, or another object. One report said he was punched and hit his head when he fell. Emergency personnel transported Reid to Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital, where he also was pronounced dead.
James Carlock, 30, was later arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter.
According to Hannah, he could not post the $50,000 bond and was still in jail Monday. Both men were employed at Hovensa.
Reid was the 19th homicide on St. Croix and 35th in the Virgin Islands in 2005.
