Oct. 17, 2005 – The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority will be kicking off a series of recycling activities during the month of October in preparation for "America Recycles Day," which is celebrated on Nov. 15.
VIWMA is extending the application deadline for signing up from Nov. 11 to Friday, Nov. 21 for both the can collection and the poster contest activities.
To increase public awareness, a series of public events to educate local students on the benefits of recycling will be held, according to a press release from the Environmental Programs Division.
"Don't TRASH Your Cans, CASH Your Cans" is a aluminum can collection contest for all elementary schools from Oct. 10 through Nov. 21. Students in kindergarten through 6th grade can compete by collecting aluminum cans to be redeemed for cash. EZ Recycling on St. Croix and STS Recycling on St. Thomas and St. John will be working with VIWMA to collect and cash out the cans from the schools.
"Yes We Can Recycle" is a poster contest for junior and senior high school students that runs from Oct. 10 through Nov. 21. Students are asked to illustrate the recycling theme through art. Prizes will be awarded in each grade and the winning posters will be highlighted in a VIWMA 2006 calendar.
For more information, call the VIWMA's Environmental Programs Division at 773-4489 on St. Croix and 777-3073 on St. Thomas.
