Oct. 15, 2005 – Lt. Gov. Vargrave Richards announced that a little more than one month after he launched a territory-wide effort to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, the joint initiative between the local chapter of the American Red Cross and his office has collected more than $370,000.
The donations came from a combination of businesses, organizations, schools and individuals. Richards said the overwhelming response from the community surpassed his original goal of $200,000.
"I am moved by the outpouring of donations that we received," Richards said. "It proved to me once again that we here in the Virgin Islands are a caring and giving people."
Richards thanked everyone who contributed through his office as well as all the other organizations that held fundraisers for the American Red Cross and various other charities to help Hurricane Katrina victims.
Jane Wherren, executive director for the local chapter of the American Red Cross, said she is also touched by the large amount of money the community has donated.
"We are extremely pleased with the amount that we have collected," Wherren said.
"The disaster relief efforts are far from over," Richards said, as he urged residents to continue making contributions to the Red Cross.
