Art Thursday Starts Fifth Year with New Galleries

Oct. 21, 2005 — Two new galleries on St. Croix are joining other galleries and jewelry studios to kick off the fifth year of Art Thursday on Nov. 3.
Maufe Gallery and Thomas Hartwell Photography Gallery will join Danica Art Gallery, The Goldworker, ib designs, Jewelweed, Maria Henle Studio and Yellow House Gallery for the opening night.
Art Thursday is a coordinated night of gallery show openings that started in 2001 as a response to the increasing number of galleries and jewelry studios on St. Croix.
Art Thursday started in December 2001.
Thursday was chosen for the coordinated openings because that day had the fewest scheduling conflicts with other events on St. Croix. The time period, 5 – 9 p.m., was chosen because it would allow people working in Christiansted to stop by the galleries after work.
"Art Thursday affords people the opportunity to walk around town and make it a night for Art and Culture," said Maria Henle, owner of Maria Henle Studio, in a press release.
Gallery owners said in a press release that Art Thursday has increased art awareness in the community.
"It has gotten people to notice my gallery space more," said Danica David, owner of Danica Art Gallery and participant in Art Thursday since 2001.
The first Thursday event starts at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3 and continues until 9 p.m. Art Thursday is scheduled for the first Thursday of every month through May 2006.
