Nieves to Go From Reichhold to Carnegie Hall

Nov. 8, 2005 — Not even Tito Nieves knows what to expect from his own concert this weekend.
"I feed off the crowd a lot, and I don't even know what to expect sometimes. We have our song list, but there's always something there that's spontaneous," Nieves said Tuesday from his home in Florida.
The Grammy-nominated salsa artist hopes to connect with a large crowd this weekend at the Reichhold Center for the Arts at the University of the Virgin Islands. He plays on St. Croix Friday, Nov. 11, and will play on St. Thomas Saturday, Nov.12. Both shows are at 8 p.m. He last performed on St. Thomas for the Reichhold Center's 25th anniversary in 2005.
Nieves said the Reichhold Center is "a beautiful place. It's one of the nicest amphitheater's I've seen. It's a nice place to play, and the acoustics are great."
But Nieves will not be staying in the Virgin Islands for long, he said. He's preparing for a late-November performance in New York City's Carnegie Hall.
Nieves has been nominated for numerous Grammy and Latin Grammy awards, and he has been performing for thirty years. His 1997 mainstream hit, I Like It Like That, went to the top of the charts.
In his decades of performing, he said, his style and music have both evolved. (See Tito Nieves to Bring His World Renowned Salsa to the Reichhold Stage.)
"It's changed, I think, for the better. Different beats are now making their way in," he said.
After 30 years, though, the trick is maintaining himself as an artist, he said.
"When you're in the industry so long, the hardest thing is to maintain yourself," he said.
He said his management, talented producer (Sergio George) and "a great record company that believes in you" are the keys to continuing a long, successful career.
For tickets to the concerts on both St. Croix and St. Thomas, call the Reichhold Center for the Arts at 693-1559 or go to www.reichholdcenter.com.
