Dec 2, 2005 – An unidentified man died in what appeared to be a hail of gunfire Friday night. The Virgin Islands Police Department, however, has no suspects, no motive and has not recovered the weapon or weapons used in the fatal shooting.
Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Hannah confirmed the death late Friday night.
"Police were called two times, at 9 p.m. and at 9:02 p.m. One caller said there was shots fired and another said there was a man laying on the ground," Hannah said.
Within minutes of the call, a bevy of police officers, detectives and forensic units converged on the scene.
The body of the black male lay motionless on the ground as detectives marked the spots where spent ammunition casings were found. Up to 18 markers lined the right side of the body. A law enforcement source said the victim's face was riddled with up to a dozen bullets and other gunshot wounds checkered his torso.
The victim was wearing black shoes, blue jeans pants, a denim jacket and a checkered blue shirt. His head was covered with a light blue colored knitted hat.
A distance away, VIPD Major Crime Unit detectives were taking a closer look at the back window of a parked vehicle that was damaged by an apparent stray bullet.
The victim lay dead within feet of the Handy Law Offices and the Reformed Church at the corner of Crystal and Nye Gade.
A murder investigation continued well into Friday night with police attempting to piece together the circumstances that led to the shooting. It was not clear how many suspects were involved, what their path of flight was or whether they were on foot or in a car.
Police appealed to anyone with information to contact the Major Crime Unit at 774-2211 or emergency 911.
