Business Owner Killed in Apparent Robbery Attempt

Dec. 13, 2005 – Police are continuing to investigate the shooting death of a St. Croix business owner. The owner was shot during what police said was an attempted robbery at his jewelry store in Contentment Monday.
Police received "the initial call around 11 a.m. first about shots being fired in the area," according to Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Hannah. At the scene, responding officers found "a man lying on the floor of A. A. Dubois Jewelry Store with multiple gunshot wounds to his body."
The victim, Alvin Dubois, owned the jewelry store, Hannah said, describing the store's location as west of Christiansted town about a block away from a police precinct in Bassin Triangle.
Witnesses told police that up to four men in a small vehicle were seen fleeing the scene. Hannah could not confirm reports of an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and Dubois. ""What I can say is that there was a failed robbery attempt and a store owner lost his life."
Hannah also said that investigators spent Monday trying to determine whether there was any connection between the Dubois shooting and a shooting a few minutes earlier.
"We got a call from the Luis Hospital emergency room that a 19-year-old was there for treatment of a gunshot wound to the chest," Hannah said.
According to witnesses at the scene, Dubois had operated his store for about four years and had been a robbery victim about two years ago. Police authorities asked anyone with information to contact the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 778-2211, 778-4950 or 911.
