Good Turnout, Good Competition for Coral Bay Thanksgiving Regatta

0

Nov. 26, 2005 –– Great weather, good friends and excellent competition made the 24th annual Coral Bay Thanksgiving Regatta a big success, numerous sailors said as they gathered at Skinny Legs Bar and Restaurant for the awards ceremony. About 45 boats participated.
This year, the Coral Bay Yacht Club did not give out an overall prize because of the large variety of boats.
Instead, the club pulled one of the class winners' name out of a bucket. The winner got a haulout at Independent Boat Yard. Coincidently, Osprey owners Larry Best and Lee Stanciauskas won the haulout and the Performance Handicap Racing Fleet 1 class. Their boat is a Luders 44.
"I have to thank all the other sailors that didn't show up," Best said, joking about the number of skippers who have their boats elsewhere this year.
He gave credit to his crew, a good start and the years of experience he and his crew of graybeards have sailing.
The best competition came with the traditional boats.
Les Anderson's Penelope, a 34-foot schooner, took first in the gaffers 35 feet and under class Friday and the traditional under 40 feet class Saturday. He said his closest competition came from Callabreeze, a Cowhorn 30, which finished second to Penelope both days.
"They always go to windward better than I do," Anderson said.
He said that it's always a battle to the finish, but Anderson said he overtook Callabreeze on the way to the finish. Penelope finished just 47 seconds ahead of Callabreeze in Saturday's race and about two minutes ahead in Friday's event.
Saturday's third place finisher in that class was Seanonda Rose, an 18-foot keelboat. Skipper Bobby Danet said Saturday's heavy seas were a little bit too much for his boat.
"We were a bit overpowered," he said.
James Julien, who won in his class Saturday aboard Slideways, a Cal 27, said that he hit the marks right every time.
Denise Wright, who came in second in her class on On-line Vacations, a Cal 2-27, took a moment to remember sailors and yacht club members who had died in recent years. She mentioned her late husband, Gary Wright, Lori Dawes, Fletcher Pitts, and David Geiger.
Geiger was murdered in October. Friends sailed his boat, Willful.
"We know David was sailing above us," committee member Jennifer Robinson said as the awards ceremony got underway.
Friday also saw some of the area's smallest boats take to the course in Coral Harbor. Hugo Roller won the Laser class. Mimi Roller and Sarah Burks won in the 420 class.
Mimi Roller, 14, said she had a lot of fun, but Burks, 15, added that they had some trouble getting the spinnaker up.
"But we got it up eventually," Burks said.
The event also had a special class for Silver Cloud, a 90-foot schooner owned by Elliott Hooper. The boat usually hauls freight. Silver Cloud finished Saturday with a time of 2:21:25.
