Jan. 7, 2006 – The St. Croix Foundation for Community Development announced the following 2005 grant award recipients from its Lundington Literacy Fund:
Women's Coalition was awarded $2500 to expand their Multi-media Learning Resource Center and Children's Center. Children will learn to read, write and communicate more effectively through interactive media including audio, visual and language-related software.
Bureau of Corrections was awarded $1900 to start a Family Reading Program focused on promoting and improving the reading skills of family units. Adult inmates will be able to record stories for their children, thereby encouraging and strengthening literacy and family ties.
St. Croix Women's Initiative was awarded $2500 to provide Eulalie R. Rivera students with a Classroom Bookshelf composed of literacy materials.
St. Croix Central High School was awarded a $2000 grant to purchase level-appropriate books that will provide the tools to increase skills and motivate students to improve their vocabulary, comprehension and critical thinking.
Established by longtime St. Croix Foundation Trustee, the late Martin Ludington, the goal of the Literacy Fund is to promote reading ability and skills in the English language among the residents of St. Croix. Administered by the foundation since 2002, the fund has granted more than $55, 000 in amounts up to $2,500 to organizations seeking to improve literacy.
As a community-based organization, the foundation invites donors to support the literacy fund or any of its other enrichment programs.
