Jan. 10, 2006 — The Copenhagen Chamber Ensemble has accepted an invitation from Puerto Rico to play at various concerts on that island. The good news for Virgin Islanders is that on the way to Puerto Rico the five-piece Ensemble will stop over on St. Croix and St. Thomas to give concerts.
As part of the cultural exchange program between Denmark and the Virgin Islands, the ensemble will give a concert at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22 at St. Croix's Island Center for the Performing Arts. Prior to the concert, a candle light reception with wine and hors d’oeuvres will start at 7 p.m. The price is $40 per person. On St. Thomas the concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24 at the Nisky Moravian Church. Tickets are $25, $10 for students with ID.
The Copenhagen Chamber Ensemble, now in its 20th year, consists of five accomplished musicians that include: Hans Gammeltoft-Hansen on flute, Gert Herzberg, on oboe, Wladyslaw Marchwinsky, on violin, celloist Anders Öberg and Steen Lindholm, on harpsichord. The ensemble has performed in churches, for music societies, and on radio and television. Three of the members are solo players in leading Danish orchestras; the fourth is a highly esteemed conductor and organist, and flautist Gammeltoft-Hansen combines his passion for music with the occupation as law professor. He is, in fact, also the ombudsman for the Danish Parliament and has just returned from Ghana where he assisted the Ghanaian Government and the local Ombudsman.
Since 1978, the ensemble has given concerts throughout Denmark, USA, the Faroe Islands, Israel, Iceland, Scotland, England, Poland, Venezuela, and Argentina — everywhere with great success. The ensemble has specialized in both baroque and contemporary music. Several Nordic composers write for them.
Their program includes music by Haendel, Telemann, Niels Viggo Bentzon, Vivaldi among others. Copenhagen Chamber Ensemble is one of Denmark’s finest chamber ensembles. It commands respect for its masterly interpretation of a wide repertoire spanning from early to contemporary music.
