Jan. 11, 2006 – Apparently, one hand didn't know what the other was doing at the Internal Revenue Bureau. When a local bookkeeper stopped by to pick up 1099 forms for her client, she was told she needed to make the request on letterhead paper. She left without the forms.
Not so, IRB attorney Tammy Smalls said. She said that all she needed to do was fill out a form requesting 1099s or W-2 VIs.
The bookkeeper trekked back to IRB, only to get the same story about the letterhead. A phone calls to Smalls from the Source followed, and Smalls went down to the lobby to give her the form.
Smalls, reached later, said she hadn't had time to sort out what happened. She passed the phone call off to Marcella Somersall, who she said handles such matters.
Somersall called back to say that it was a "miscommunication" and that the situation had been ironed out.
She said that people can either come with a letter on letterhead or fill out the form when they get to IRB.
A Jan. 3 news release from IRB Director Louis Willis announced that employers must make a written request for the forms that includes the employer identification number and the number of forms required.
"It is unfortunate that we have to require written requests, but the Bureau has received a number of fraudulent W-2 VIs within the past several years," Willis said.
Willis reminded employers that they are required to provide form W-2 VI, which is the Virgin Islands' wage and tax statement, to their employees by Jan. 31.
