Sunset Jazz Features Guitarist Elvis Pedro

0

Jan 18, 2006 – Kicking off the New Year with some serious jazz talent on Friday, Sunset Jazz will present featured artist and friend of Sunset Jazz — guitarist Elvis Pedro.
Often provoking responses of "Wow" amongst audiences throughout the territory, Pedro is easily recognized as one of the most talented jazz guitarists in the Caribbean. Pedro, a native Crucian, started studying and playing the guitar in 1975. His early inspiration came from Wes Montgomery, George Benson and Kevin Eubanks, as well as fellow Crucians Ronnie Russell and Fred Thomas. Like Montgomery, Pedro is essentially self-taught on guitar, through reading, studying and practicing for thousands of hours. He has played with Jimmy Owens, George Benson, Joe Johnson, The Drifters, Freddy Williams and others.
Pedro will be joined on stage with a line-up that could only be described as a gathering of Caribbean Jazz All-Stars. Marsvyn David on bass, Toby Derima on drums, Pikey Copemann on saxaphone, Charles Farrell on congas, and Antoine Clark on piano. Guest vocalists include Kamala Miller and Shantal Harrigan.
Sunset Jazz in Frederiksted is presented by the Frederiksted Economic Development Association, Inc. and, being a family affair, begins at 6 p.m. and goes for two hours. Attendees are encouraged by Sunset Jazz producer, Bridget Cox-Dawson, to bring folding chairs or blankets to sit on. FEDA operates a cash bar, with proceeds going toward the costs of producing the jazz programs, and Hispanos Unidos sells food to raise funds for its community outreach projects. With it's early evening hours, concert goers are afforded the opportunity to stay in the West and enjoy one of the restaurants or night spots. FEDA is joined in its efforts to present Sunset Jazz by Sunny 99.5 FM, the official radio station of Sunset Jazz, West Indies Corporation and also by WTJX-Channel 12—the V.I. PBS station. WTJX-Channel 12 broadcasts Sunset Jazz on Saturday evenings at 8 p.m.
