Jan. 24, 2006 – The Committee on Rules and Judiciary is scheduled to hold a meeting on January 27, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Croix Conference Room to discuss four very important bills pertaining to the Revised Organic Act. Senator Russell would like to welcome residents of the territory to attend. The purpose of the meeting is to gather information from the community and record the public's feedback regarding proposed legislative changes to the bills currently up for consideration, including four bills that would affect the Organic Act. Residents are encouraged to attend in light of recent public discussion on the need for municipal government and in order to publicly provide the community with more options on issues concerning the territory's autonomy.
Senator Russell is urging the public to become involved in the legislative decision-making process and welcomes input on the bills up for debate. Current bills that are of particular significance include: BR 26-0038 to lower the number of voters required for an initiative to take effect; BR 26-0037 to charter municipal governments and to provide for a referendum on the charter of municipal governments on St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John; BR 26-0086 to provide that Legislative Sessions be held on the island of St. Croix; and BR 26-0131 determining where the capital and the seat of government shall be located.
Senator Russell would like to thank the community and looks forward to the discussion.
