Jan. 28, 2006 — The sun refused to shine on the Leeward Islands cricketers Saturday as Barbados protected its lead in a rain-plagued second day of the Carib Beer Series cricket match at Cancryn Cricket Grounds.
The Bajan defense held the Leewards to 258 runs, well short of Barbados' 360 first-inning total.
Rain and 40-mile-per-hour wind gusts delayed play until 12:45 p.m., when the Leewards resumed batting. Play was called again at 2:42 when near-horizontal rain pelted the pitch.
The overnight batsmen Austin Richards and Sylvester Joseph made a decent stand for the Leewards who started the day 88 for loss of three.
Barbados bowler Ryan Hinds stretched to catch out Richards, dropping the fourth Leeward wicket, 178 for four. Richards finished with 64.
The fifth wicket fell at 203 as Steve Liburd was caught by bowler Ian Bradshaw.
Wilden Cornwall posted 18 runs before he was caught by wicketkeeper Patrick Browne at 229 for six.
Ryan Nurse initially bobbled but managed to catch Joseph, ending his stand at 63 and dropping the seventh wicket at 235.
Moments later Dale Richards collapsed to the pitch to catch Omari Banks at 235 for eight.
The wind howled as Nurse made an easy catch of a high lobbing hit by Alderman Lesmond, 243 for nine.
The final wicket fell as Browne caught Bradshaw, 258 all out.
There was some good news for the Leewards as Barbados resumed batting, however.
Wilden Cornwall caught Dale Richards on just the fourth ball after Barbados resumed batting, four for loss of one.
Barbados posting 45 second-inning runs for loss of one before play was ended due to failing light.
