Jan. 31, 2006 – Deputy School Superintendent Cecelia Knowles will take over as acting superintendent for St. Croix, Education Department spokesman Juel Anderson said Tuesday.
The current superintendent, Terrence Joseph retired Tuesday.
"He's been in the system for more than 30 years," Anderson said.
Joseph could not be reached for comment.
In a January/February 2000 issue of "Island News," Joseph said his detail-oriented style gave educators more power because it freed them from the minutiae of teaching.
He said that he regularly rode the bus with students so he could find out what was on their minds.
A 1971 graduate of St. Joseph's High School on St. Croix, Joseph received his bachelor's degree from the University of the District of Columbia in 1974.
He returned to the Virgin Islands, earning his master's degree in 1980 through a Howard University summer program.
He started his education career as a social studies teacher at St. Croix's Central High School. After teaching there three years, he was appointed in 1978 as assistant principal at Arthur A. Richards Junior High School.
Four years later, he was named intermediate supervisor of education for the St. Croix District before returning to Arthur A. Richards as principal.
He was there for 16 years. In January 1999, he took over the superintendent's post.
