Graduation Application Deadline is Monday, Feb. 6
According to the UVI Academic Calendar, Monday, Feb. 6, is the last day for students to apply for graduation in the spring of 2006.
UVI Students Encouraged to Apply for Joyner Foundation Scholarships
Full-time, matriculated UVI students are encouraged to apply for UVI/Tom Joyner Foundation scholarships. A total of 68 Tom Joyner Foundation scholarships were awarded following the 2002 UVI/Tom Joyner Foundation School of the Month campaign. The next UVI/Tom Joyner Foundation scholarships will be awarded for the 2006-2007 academic year. The application deadline is May 31, 2006. Application forms can be downloaded from the UVI/Tom Joyner Foundation School of the Month web site which is available from the UVI home page www.uvi.edu or directly from the UVI/TJF web site. The UVI/TJF web site also includes detailed information about UVI's designation as the Tom Joyner Foundation's School of the Month for May 2006.
UVI Students Offered Chance at Summer Internship on Reef Conservation
UVI students are encouraged to apply for a summer internship to study coral reef conservation. The internship award – the Governor Tause P.F. Sunia Memorial Coral Reef Conservation Summer Internship Award – was announced by the United States Coral Reef Task Force (USCRTF). Students from the U.S. Virgin Islands will compete for the two available internships with students from Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Hawaii, American Samoa, the Freely Associated States and Puerto Rico. Two winners will receive a three-month, expenses-paid summer internship working on coral reef management initiatives with an agency member of the USCRTF. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an associate's or bachelor's degree program in marine policy or science with emphasis on coral reefs. They must also have completed a minimum of one academic year of study in that program and be legal residents of one of the listed territories or jurisdictions. The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Feb. 17. Fencing Project Completed on St. Croix Campus
UVI has announced that work on fencing the southern perimeter of the University's St. Croix campus was recently completed. The project closes off access to the campus by way of the police station. All traffic to the campus must now use the main entrance to Palm Drive from Centerline Road.
American Sign Language Classes Offered by VIUCEDD
American Sign Language (ASL) classes will be offered on both St. Croix and St. Thomas from Monday, Feb. 27, through Friday, May 5, according to an announcement from the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence on Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD). Students will be exposed to Level I: Part A of the ASL course. A $130 registration fee covers the entire cost of the course. The deadline for registering is Friday, Feb. 17. Business Seminar for Craft, Food and Hobby Vendors Set Jan. 31
A business seminar titled "Turn Your Passion Into Profits" will be presented from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31. This is a Women's Network for Entrepreneurial Training (WNET) seminar. It is sponsored by the New Image Foundation in collaboration with the UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC). The seminar, which costs $10 with pre-registration or $15 at the door, will be held at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. It is part of a series designed to help individuals start their own small business ventures. Researcher from The Netherlands to Present Feb. 1 Seminar on Cassava
Dr. Nick de Vetten, a visiting researcher from The Netherlands, will present a seminar at UVI at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The seminar is titled "Starch Modification in Plants by Genetic Modification." It will be presented in Evans Center room 713 on the St. Croix campus, with a videoconference link to Teacher Education room 101, on the St. Thomas campus. Dr. de Vetten is visiting St. Croix with a colleague, Dr. Krit Raemaker from Wageningen University. They are continuing work with UVI Professor Dr. Thomas Zimmerman on the development of amylos free starch cassava. The seminar is open to the general public. SBDC Schedules St. John Seminar on Securing Federal Contracts on Feb. 1
A seminar on securing contracts with the federal government is scheduled for 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Legislature Conference Room in Cruz Bay, St. John. The conference is sponsored by the UVI Small Business Development Center and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Presenter Carl Christensen, project officer with the SBA, will outline procedures required for businesses to secure contracts to supply products or services to the federal government. The seminar title is: SBA's 8(a) Business Development and Procurement Program Orientations and Procedures to Secure Federal Government Contracts. Admission is free, but pre-registration is required. Reichhold Center Schedules Original Quelbe Production for Feb. 4
An original production – Playing Ring: A Musical Journey into Quelbe – is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Playing Ring, produced by the Reichhold, is designed to pay tribute to Quelbe, the official music of the U.S. Virgin Islands. A selection of "scratch" bands and quadrille dancers will be featured. St. Thomas Golden Key Induction Scheduled Feb. 5
An induction ceremony for the St. Thomas Chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. This year's ceremony will include the participation of Holly DeLauara, Golden Key International Honour Society Associate Director of U.S. University Relations. Golden Key members and employees of the University of the Virgin Islands are invited to attend.
Governor's Occupational Safety and Health Conference Set Feb. 7-9
The first annual Governor's Occupational Safety and Health Conference has been scheduled on St. Thomas for Feb. 7-9 at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef Resort. The conference, sponsored by UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center (CELL), is free and open to the public and private sectors. It is designed for individuals interested in making the workplace safer for employees and customers. Daily sessions are planned from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Specific training is planned in these subject areas: confined spaces, electrical safety, fire safety, health care and indoor air quality. SBDC Sets Seminars on Retirement and Investment Planning for Feb. 8 -9
Seminars on retirement planning and investment planning strategies are scheduled by the UVI Small Business Development Center on St. Thomas from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 8 and 9. The seminars, titled "Begin with the End in Mind," will be conducted by Julito A. Francis, a certified financial planner and vice president and financial consultant with Popular Securities. St. Thomas/St. John Chapter UVI Alumni Association Sets Meeting for Feb. 9
A general meeting of the St. Thomas/St. John Chapter of the UVI Alumni Association is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 9, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on the St. Thomas campus.
