Feb. 3, 2006 – United States Attorney Anthony J. Jenkins announced today an essay contest in the public schools for Black History Month. The essay contest will be held at the Antonio Jarvis Elementary School on St. Thomas and the Juanita Gardine Elementary School on St. Croix.
The essay must be on any subject of Black History relating to the Virgin Islands and must be turned in by the end of the school day on Wednesday, Feb. 8. A committee in each school will choose the winners.
Schools interested in being involved in the contest should contact the office of the U.S. Attorney in order to be placed in rotation for next year. Only two schools, one in each division (St. Croix and St.Thomas/St. John) will be selected each year, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The winners will be announced on Feb. 15 and will receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. Second and Third places winners will receive a $50 savings bond. The goal of the contest is to motivate students to learn about Black History as it relates to the V.I.
