Issac Named to Fill Position Vacated by Roach

Feb. 11, 2006 — Laurie Isaac had been named to the post of acting director at the Board of Education, chairwoman Judy M. Gomez announced in a news release Friday. Gomez said Issac will serve in that capacity until the board makes a permanent appointment.
Isaac, the board's business and finance director, will take over from Tregenza Roach, who is resigning his post on Feb. 15. Roach did not return a message left at his house Saturday.
Gomez said in the news release that Isaac has served the board several times as acting director. She has worked at the Board of Education since 1988.
Roach, who previously served as the Education Department's legal counsel, left Education to assume the director's position in 2003. In a move that surprised the board, he handed in his resignation on Jan. 30.
The reasons for his departure remain unclear. He said following a Board of Education meeting to discuss his resignation that he was leaving for personal reasons.
A Feb. 2 Radio One (AM 1000) report quoted unnamed sources who said that Roach and Gomez had clashed in recent times. Other sources suggested that the board had become increasingly frustrated with the pace of the teacher certification process.
In recent years, the board has been fraught with infighting between members and staff. The ousting of former chairman Jorge "Tito" Galiber, his suit against the board, and his successful re-election bid for a position on the board have been factors in the unsettled atmosphere at the agency.
The nine-member Board of Education took office last year but by August board member Nereida O'Reilly had resigned and moved to the U.S. mainland.
