Feb. 17, 2006 — Anticipating a huge influx of visitors to the "big island" of St. Croix over the AgFair weekend the Frederiksted Economic Development Association (FEDA) is presenting back-to-back Sunset Jazz concerts on Friday and Saturday. Featured artists for the Friday Sunset Jazz are Stanley & the Ten Sleepless Knights, Hans Leonardo Pedersen and the VI Rhythm Section. The special Saturday night presentation features St. Croix native Hugh "Fuma" Petersen Jazz Quintet.
Petersen is a professional jazz drummer who performed worldwide with some of the top names in the jazz industry. After graduating from high school on St. Croix, Petersen attended Julliard School of Music and Berkley College of Music. He also holds degrees from the University of North Carolina and North Carolina Central University. Petersen studied African History, music and photography at Pace University. He lives in Louisville, Kentucky and teaches at Louisville's Flying Hands School of Music.
Performing in the Petersen Jazz Quintet is Tim Whalen on saxophone, Pete Petersen on keyboards, Brian Vinson on bass and jazz vocalist Gail Wynters.
The free concert begins at 6 p.m. at the Frederiksted Public Beach, north of Fort Frederik. Concertgoers are reminded to bring chairs or blankets, as seating is limited. FEDA operates a drink concession with all proceeds going towards covering the production costs of Sunset Jazz.
Event sponsors are WTJX / Channel 12, Sunny 99.5 FM, FirstBank VI and Hovensa.
