Feb. 23, 2006 – Kenneth E. Mapp, director of the Public Finance Authority, has resigned. In a letter to Gov. Charles W. Turnbull dated Feb. 22, Mapp said, "Subject to the request of the members of the board of directors of the PFA…I herein tender notice of termination of said contract effective at the close of business on March 22, 2006."
Mapp was apparently pressured into resigning by the board and members of the community based on the fact that he is apparently running for governor.
Advertisements have appeared bearing the slogan "Need a Mapp for the Future?" in print, on radio, and on T-shirts and bumper stickers. Mapp was also seen wearing a hat with a similar slogan at St. Croix's Agricultural Fair.
No mention of the resignation was made during Wednesday's PFA board meeting, which started two hours late.
Mapp has been under contract with the government since March 2002, after replacing longtime PFA Director Amadeo Francis, who was fired by Turnbull during the same month.
Mapp was making $100 an hour plus expenses.
At the end of his letter to Turnbull, Mapp wrote, "I want you to know that I appreciated your continued support deeply and wish you God's speed and good health; but as we all know, 'when you gotta go, you gotta go.'"
Mapp did not return several calls made on Thursday.
