Park Scholarships Available to V.I. College Students

Feb. 24, 2006 – Students planning careers in fields relating to natural resource management or protection are encouraged to apply for a Friends of Virgin Islands National Park scholarship.
"We created the scholarship to provide an incentive for students to pursue those fields," said Friends program manager Kristin Maize on Friday.
The program provides $1,000 scholarships for two students entering their junior or senior years at an accredited university. The students must major in a discipline such as marine biology, botany, ecology, forestry or other field related to natural resources.
Maize said that a summer internship with the Friends may be possible.
April 30 is the deadline to apply.
Priority is given to students studying at the University of the Virgin Islands, but V.I. students studying at any accredited university are eligible to apply.
Students must have Virgin Islands residency, have completed high school in the Virgin Islands, completed prerequisite work for majors in appropriate fields, and maintained a B or 3.0 average through the first three semesters for sophomore applicants, and through the first five semesters for junior applicants.
Maize said that St. Thomas resident Makeda Okolo, a student at American University in Washington, D.C., received a scholarship the past two years.
Applications are available at UVI's financial aid office and at the Friends of the Park office in Mongoose Junction shopping center.
Call the Friends at 779-4940 for more information.
