Feb. 24, 2006 – Although Jerris T. Browne has been on the job in an acting capacity since November, Gov. Charles Turnbull moved Friday to make Browne's appointment permanent as director of the Motor Vehicle Bureau.
The governor sent a letter to Senate President Lorraine Berry asking that the Legislature vote on his nomination.
"I have full confidence that under Mr. Browne's leadership, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles will develop into a professional, efficient establishment," Turnbull wrote in a press release.
Browne took over as the department head after the Legislature in October voted to cut the Motor Vehicle Bureau from the Police Department's umbrella. He was a deputy police commissioner before taking on his new job.
Browne served on the Public Services Commission until several weeks ago.
PSC Director Keithley Joseph said Saturday that Brown told him he was resigning because his "new job would take too much of his time" and he wouldn't have sufficient time to devote to PSC matters.
