March 2, 2006 – It's time again for the Herman E. Moore Golf Course to be magically transformed into the island's biggest picnic table.
The University of the Virgin Islands is celebrating its 17th Afternoon on the Green this Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. on the university's sporting green. Event committee chairwoman Gail Steele calls the event "the island's biggest lawn party."
This year's theme is "Food, Fun – An Educational Mix On The Green for 2006."
While food is the main attraction, UVI recruitment office representatives will be accepting student applications on site, along with displays from UVI academic divisions.
It's a real community affair. Thousands of folks gather each year to enjoy the culinary wonders and renew old friendships. There will be a special children's attraction by Kids Entertainment Company, along with lots of other activities to keep the little ones busy.
Treats will range from roast pork or salt fish to banana pie, guava tarts, a traditional salt fish paté or, perhaps, some Puerto Rican piñon, a plantain custard-and-meat dish.
And that's just for openers. Try adding chicken stew, tofu balls, macaroni and cheese, potato stuffing, seafood pasta, and rice and peas. It's all available for just $2 a taste, and the portions are generous.
The Superior Court Rising Stars Steel Orchestra will provide music for the afternoon.
The food will be divided into main dishes, breads, soups, side dishes, seafood, native drinks and desserts.
Steele says more cooks are welcome and needed.
To donate a dish, call the UVI Institutional Advancement Office at 693-1040. Cooks don't have to have an affiliation with UVI, just the desire to share their family's favorite creations with the island.
