VIWMA Issues Waste Haulers Permit Applications


March 7, 2006 – All solid waste and septic haulers must submit their permit applications by the Friday, March 10 deadline, as required by the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority. They can be pick up applications from the VIWMA Division of Solid Waste on St. Thomas at the Department of Public Works in Subbase and on St. Croix at the Public Works' Anna's Hope Compound.
All companies and individuals who use the landfills or wastewater treatment plants for disposal are required to have a hauler's permit. After the permit application is submitted, an appointment will be given for inspection of the vehicles requiring the permit.
To obtain a waste hauler's permit, the following must be presented at the time of submitting the application: a current vehicle registration, a current vehicle insurance card, a current business license, and proof of valid liability insurance covering operations in the amounts of: $200,000 per accident, $50,000 per person, and $50,000 for property damage, according to the press release from VIWMA.
After the permit application is accepted, an appointment will be given for the vehicle to be inspected. All vehicles must pass an inspection of the following: hydraulics, speedometer, available tarpaulin, brakes, tires, available rake/shovel/broom, horn, available scones and reflector lights. There must be no oil leaks.
After march 31, litter citations will be issued to any waste hauler who does not possess a valid permit and the hauler will not be allowed access to the landfills or treatment facilities.
