UVI Board of Trustees Approves Compensation Plan

March 12, 2006 — At the quarterly meeting of the University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees, held March 11 on the St. Croix campus, the board approved the Fiscal Year 2006 Compensation Adjustment Proposal for UVI employees.
The compensation adjustment plan is comprised of three phases: Phase I involves a base salary increase of 1.5 percent for full-time employees for each full year of service starting October 1, 2001 through September 30, 2005, plus an across-the-board adjustment of $2,000, and a 15 percent increase in the rate paid to part-time faculty.
Phase I is expected to be implemented by April 14, 2006. By June 2006 a study will be presented to the board outlining Phase II of the proposal, which will address internal equity and market salary analyses. Phase III will be committed to presenting a proposal on a performance incentive plan by September 2006.
In other business, the board approved a plan for a Wellness Center to be constructed adjacent to the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. The 6,000-square-foot comprehensive fitness facility will contain a weight room, dance studio and commuter lounge, providing space for university weight training and fitness classes. The center is expected to open in fall 2007, and, according to UVI Athletic Director Peter Sauer, should foster "a culture of wellness among students, faculty and staff."
The UVI Board of Trustees unanimously approved a new Master of Arts degree in Mathematics Education for Secondary Teachers. The Master's in Mathematics Education degree is a three-year cohort program developed in collaboration with the V.I. Department of Education, the V.I.-EPSCoR program and UVI's Education and Science and Mathematics divisions.
"I think both the Master's in Mathematics Education and the Wellness Center are two initiatives about which we should be very excited," UVI Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Auguste E. Rimpel Jr. said.
The board also approved the 2000-2005 Strategic Plan Closeout Report and the Vision 2012 framework. Vision 2012 is the university's strategic plan for 2006 to 2012, which outlines the goals, objectives and priorities for guiding UVI into the future as an exceptional institution of higher learning.
The next meeting of the UVI Board of Trustees is scheduled to take place on the St. Thomas campus in June.
