Anna in the Tropics, according to the press release from CCT, is a poignant and poetic play set in Florida in 1929 in a Cuban-American cigar factory, where cigars are still rolled by hand and "lectors" are employed to educate and entertain the workers. The arrival of a new lector is a cause for celebration, but when he begins to read aloud from "Anna Karenina," he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his listeners, for whom Tolstoy, the tropics and the American dream prove a volatile combination.
Chester Delacruz directs the ensemble cast of Diamond Bishop, Allan LaBerteaux, Charles Braslow, Jacqueline Heyliger, Ale Santa Maria, Mariah Shabazz and Carmen Simmonds.
Anna in the Tropics is sponsored M. Beverly and Robert G. Bartner, Capital Mortgage Services, Caribbean Printing & Marketing, Christiansted Apothecary Hall, Essentials for the Office, Hamilton Real Estate, Island Heritage Insurance Co., Ltd., Mongoose 104.9, Isle 95 and Sunny FM 99.5, Walt Julio and V.I. Cargo.
This project is jointly supported by a grant from the V.I. Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, DC, a federal agency
