Dear Source:
The resolution asking Congress to allow Virgin Islanders to decide where the capital and the seat of government of the territory should be has flushed out the attitudes of the elite power base on St. Thomas and highlighted extreme biases and condescension toward St. Croix. The resolution benefits the territory by increasing our ability to make decisions for ourselves.
Moreover, a visit to the government house in Christiansted, as compared to any other structure in the territory, demonstrates that it is the most appropriate place for the seat of government. The history, the style and grandeur of the building situated in Christiansted can be compared to none in the territory. At public hearings on all three islands, the residents of St. Croix and St. John wholeheartedly supported this resolution.
The best justification for this move is to relieve the unbearable traffic congestion and overdevelopment of Charlotte Amalie. Additionally, consider the conversion of government structures in Charlotte Amalie to increase the tourism product. Imagine renovating the old barracks, now housing the Virgin Islands legislature, to be used as a museum and an added attraction to Charlotte Amalie.
