0

March 18, 2006 – Time has not run out for students to enter essays on the historic achievements of women in the territory, as the V.I. Commission on the Status of Women has extended the deadline for its contest to March 31.
Designed to commemorate Women's History Month and to develop an understanding of women's roles in history, students from grades four to 12 are encouraged to take part in the essay contest.
The essay theme for students from fourth to sixth grades is "In your life today, what current V.I. woman has influenced who you are?" For seventh- and eighth-graders, the theme is "What in your opinion is a major issue facing V.I. women today and why?" And students in grades nine to 12 are to write on "How can more V.I. women be encouraged to become involved in local politics?"
Monetary prizes and gift certificates will be awarded for first, second and third place in each category.
Contest entry forms are available at local schools.
