Plenty of 2006 ADDY Awards to Go Around

March 20, 2006 — The champagne and awards were flowing freely Sunday night as the advertising community acknowledged the work of its members at the Ad Club of the Virgin Islands 24th Annual ADDY Awards ceremony at Marriott Frenchman's Reef.
Unlike other years no one person or company completely dominated the competition.
Austin Advertising and MLB Creative were tied for the sheer number of winning entries, with 20 each, but several newcomers or one-man shows picked up awards in the "best of" categories.
Mike Perron, owner of The Paint Depot, walked off with the overall Best of Show and the Donald Plantz Best of Print award. Perron, who creates and executes all of his own advertising for print, said as he accepted the Plantz Award, "I want to thank my client for approving every ad I ever wrote."
Reportedly one of the judges remarked of one of Perron's print ads, "part of a great body of work using humor to get the message across without ever showing a paint can."
Lambert Media, relative newcomers to the Virgin Islands, took the other two Plantz awards for Best of Radio and Best of Television.
Lou Lambert, whose company produced the video portion of the two-hour show, was too busy managing the action to have time to revel in his wins, which also included a Silver ADDY Award for the 2005 ADDY presentation. Lambert was acknowledged in a couple of categories for a video production that plays before the opening of movies on St. Thomas called "It's Home" for FirstBank Mortgage.
The awards also piled up for the St. John Sun Times, which won a gold and two silver ADDYs for Publication Design, and another gold and silver for newspaper design.
Cinematographer Eric Miles of Studio Five took the Mosaic Award for multi-cultural work for his "We the People" – Transfer Day Perspectives.
A new award was added to the roster this year in honor of Peter de Blanc, who is generally acknowledged for bringing the Virgin Islands into the virtual world of the Internet. De Blanc died in 2002.
His widow, Dorothy Sparks, presented MLB Creative with the first Peter de Blanc Award for Best of Interactive for the MLB Creative Web site.
In order to maintain the highest quality and integrity of judging, MLB founder Terri Brown said judges are selected from across the country. This year's group included Ann McFadden, vice president/creative director emeritus, Blattner Brunner Inc.; Sheldon Clay, creative director/partner, Carmichael Lynch; and Daniel O. Vargas, founder, Vargas and Amigos Inc.
All winning ADDY Awards are forwarded to the district competition where winners of this stage of the competition go forward to compete with the best advertisements from across the entire U.S. in the National ADDY Competition.
Ad Club founder Bob Austin announced a special award acknowledging the years of service that public relations specialist Norita Lee has offered to the community and the Ad Club. She served as president in 2000.
Austin reminisced about some of the good times and the bad times for the club, recalling after Hurricane Hugo devastated the islands meeting at H. Stern jewelry store in town where then marketing manager Rita Saeuberlich, who died in 2005, gave club members refuge which included ice cold drinks, a working generator – which meant air conditioning – and sandwiches.
Current Ad Club president Gloria Gumbs said in her opening remarks, "The messages must be heard through the good times and the bad times."
It would seem that was what Austin was saying about the track record of the club which marked its 25th anniversary this year.
The event was hosted by Mark Bastin from KQS radio and Monyka Johnigan from TV2. The sponsors of the event were West Indies Corp., Bellows International Inc., The Holiday Inn Windward Passage Hotel, Scotiabank, the Marriott Frenchman's Reef Beach Resort, Seaborne Airlines, the Virgin Islands Daily News, TV2, Knight Quality Stations and Cool Signs.
