March 31, 2006 – Friends of Virgin Islands National Park, Virgin Islands National Park, Keep America Beautiful and other participants are joining forces to celebrate Earth Day 2006. The festivities will begin with an Earth Day Environmental Fair, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Friday April 21, at the National Park Ball Field in Cruz Bay. This event is free and open to the public.
There will be environmental and recycling demonstrations, science exhibits, fun eco-activities, kids games, environmental story time and a petting zoo. Kids will get to participate in a simulated archeological dig, take part in a gardening workshop, and learn about coral reefs and safe fishing techniques. Pan Dragons will provide the music and there will be snacks for the kids. All St. John schools are invited to attend.
Friday's Earth Day Fair will be followed by beach and trail cleanups on Saturday, April 22. Participants of the Friends' Adopt-A-Beach/Trail program are asked to remove debris from their adopted beach/trail as part of an island-wide cleanup. The Adopt-A-Beach/Trail program encourages volunteer groups to adopt a site and become responsible for keeping it clean. If you are interested in adopting a beach/trail or simply joining a scheduled cleanup, please contact Kristen at the Friends, 779-4940.
Volunteers are needed to help make these events a success. Those interested in volunteering should contact Kristen at the Friends.
