Country Day Wins Third Consecutive Quiz Bowl

0

April 5, 2006 – Coming in undefeated from Monday's territorial Quiz Bowl games, the St. Croix Country Day School's team kept up its track record Tuesday by beating out the Antilles School Brainstorms and winning the competition during the last two rounds of play.
Tensions were high during the final match, as Antilles stepped onto the stage at the Palms Court Harborview Hotel on St. Thomas, after two wins Tuesday against the All Saints Cathedral School and the Charlotte Amalie High School. To take the competition, Antilles had to beat out Country Day in Game 14, and play them again in a final elimination game.
Despite their previous wins, Antilles was the underdog in the match, after suffering a loss to Charlotte Amalie during a game Monday. Facing off, the Antilles team maintained a slight lead during the first and second rounds, dominating the game with knowledge of math and mythological trivia.
Country Day gained the lead in round three, however, and came out on top, finishing the competition after answering some quick general knowledge questions during the last few minutes.
"We had to play four games today in order to win and that's kind of tough," said Mark Davis, a senior at Antilles, after the match. "And while we had momentum coming in after winning the first two games, we had some trouble with the current events questions in the last round. It was tough."
Nathan Sell, also a senior at Antilles and the team's captain, said, "We're proud of our team though. Country Day is a good team, and I think we did well playing against them."
Country Day team coach Kevin Marin had similar sentiments. After the award ceremony he said the Antilles team was tough. "They were aggressive and eager to win, and they had played two other games today back to back and won those, so they seemed ready to charge when we sat down with them in the third game."
Country Day senior Britta Victor added, "Yeah, we were getting kind of nervous watching them up there during the first two games. But we were able to maintain our confidence and stay on track."
This is the third consecutive territorial Quiz Bowl win for Country Day, who will go on to represent the territory in early June at the national competition in San Antonio, Texas.
"We were going for the steamroller effect," joked Marin. "We had won all of our games during the first two days of the competition, so we just continued to roll on through and move ahead for the win. And we plan on continuing to win in future competitions."
Hoisting the winning trophies above their heads, the Country Day team – named "Guy's Gals and Guys" in honor of the school's former quiz bowl coach Guy Roth – grinned, hugged each other and talked excitedly about participating on the national level.
"We've never been to San Antonio before, and I think we'd have some fun there," Marin said.
"It's party time at the Alamo," his team added.
