0

April 5, 2006 – The V.I. Water and Power Authority has postponed its deadline for applications by graduation high school seniors for the 13th annual Alva C. McFarlane Engineering Scholarship. The deadline is now April 18.
The Alva C. McFarlane Scholarship provides up to $60,000 to graduating seniors to pursue a bachelor's degree in engineering or up to $20,000 to earn an associate degree in electronics technology or electronics engineering.
Four scholarships are offered this year – one at each level in both the St. Croix and St. Thomas-St. John-Water Island districts. WAPA has a critical need for electrical engineers so preference will be given this year to applicants seeking a degree in that field of study.
For the second year, WAPA requires that McFarlane scholars studying for a bachelor's degree enroll in the five-year engineering program at the University of the Virgin Islands.
This program conducted in partnership with two mainland universities – Columbia University in New York City and Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., is highly regarded. Students attend UVI for their first three years of study and complete the degree at one of the pre-selected universities.
Applicants for the associate's degree scholarship must be accepted by a college or university accredited by a recognized educational accrediting organization in the United States.
The scholarship pays tuition, room and board, fees, books and supplies.
McFarlane Scholars are selected on academic performance, community service, a personal interview and financial need.
Scholars must return full-time paid employment at WAPA for a period of time equal to the period of the scholarship award received.
Over the last 13 years, WAPA has awarded scholarships to 27 of the Virgin Islands' top students.
