April 7, 2006 – The Department of Planning and Natural Resources announced that Director Thomas Lindsay of the National Endowment for the Humanities Library has commended Rachelle Shells, head librarian, because Enid M. Baa Library is among the 2,000 libraries across the nation to receive the We the People "Becoming American" Bookshelf grant.
Shells applied for the bookshelf grant from the endowment and American Library Association on behalf of the Enid M. Baa Library and nine public school libraries. All were awarded, according to a press release from DPNR.
"We are committed to this project which is intended to promote awareness and national pride, it is our duty and responsibility as Americans," said territorial librarian Wallace Williams. He also said that this is an opportunity to promote discussion in our libraries, schools and communities about the meaning of being an American and the variety of experiences through which so many have become Americans.
