St. John Shootings Appear Related, Police Say

April 10, 2006 – A round of shootings on St. John over the weekend appear to be related, said Shawna Richards, Police Department public relations manager, on Monday.
Richards said the incidents began at 7:40 p.m. Friday when a 16-year-old was shot in Cruz Bay. Richards did not have details about his condition.
She said that as police went looking for Jahil Ward, identified by the 16-year-old as the shooter, Ward was shot at 11:34 p.m. Friday in front of Meada's Plaza in Cruz Bay.
She said Ward, 18, of Gifft Hill was shot in the back. "He said the suspects drove up in a dark vehicle," Richards said.
Ward was transported to Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center before being sent to Roy L. Schneider Hospital. Richards said she believes he was then airlifted to a hospital in Puerto Rico.
Richards said that at midnight Sunday, someone fired buckshot into a shanty in Coral Bay, hitting the three people inside.
"One is believed to be a suspect in the Meada's Plaza shooting," she said.
She did not have many details, but said all three victims received medical treatment.
However, one resident said the incidents don't seem worrisome.
"I think occasionally these things just get going," Bonnie Blair said.
