Vigil to Pay Tribute to Sherett James, Other Victims of Violence

April 8, 2006 – The University of the Virgin Islands will hold a "Vigil for Nonviolence" at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to maximize the awareness of violence against women and the rampant violence in the Virgin Islands.
Spurred by the March 25 killing of UVI junior Sherett James, the vigil will also pay tribute to other victims of violence.
The vigil will be held on the Herman E. Moore Golf Course, near the Recreation Center.
Andrea Hamm, St. Thomas campus counseling and placement supervisor said, "The UVI community is saddened and outraged by the recent death of Sherett James."
"The University of the Virgin Islands would like to extend condolences to her family."
"Violence of any form is not acceptable nor should it be tolerated," said Hamm, whose office is an organizer of the event. "We must confront apathy by promoting action."
James' mother, Caroley Brunn, will attend the vigil, as will Cecille Carroll, whose son Jason Carroll was also a UVI student when he was murdered on the streets of St. Thomas.
UVI students are asked to come prepared to "speak out" against violence through poetry, musical selections or short skits.
The public is also invited to attend and participate.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a towel for seating on the grass as chairs will be limited. Refreshments will be served.
The Vigil for Nonviolence is sponsored by the UVI Counseling and Placement Center, the Humanities and Social Sciences Division, and the offices of the Campus Executive Administrator and the Associate Campus Administrator.
Hamm also said that April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
