May 3, 2006 – Gov. Charles W. Turnbull is out of the territory attending education policy meetings and accepting awards.
He left Wednesday to go to North Carolina to meet with the James B. Hunt Jr. Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy board of directors, on which he has been appointed to serve.
A release from Government House said, "The institute has recognized Turnbull's commitment toward improving public education in America and its territories, and sought his guidance and good counsel to help bring about necessary changes to the education system."
The institute's Web site includes the following mission statement:
"In order to provide all students with an equitable chance to succeed and to foster a high quality of life for all citizens, the James B. Hunt Jr. Institute … cultivates state leadership that focuses on public education's value and actively promotes the fundamental role of governors to instill and protect the ideals of democracy."
The institute is considering hosting a convention, the Government House release said. The board will meet to discuss whether the convention is feasible and to consider the future direction of the institute.
From there, Turnbull will travel to Minneapolis, Minn., where he will be presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award from his alma mater, the University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development. Turnbull will be one of 100 alumni to be honored. The award will be presented at a dinner on May 6 celebrating the College of Education's centennial.
Turnbull matriculated from the University of Minnesota in the 1970s and received his Ph.D. in Education Administration in 1976.
He is expected to return to the territory May 10. Lt. Gov. Vargrave Richards assumes the duties of governor in Turnbull's absence.
