May 15, 2006 – The St. Croix Yacht Club will hold a Memorial Day weekend event, the Cruzan Open One Design Regatta. The regatta, chaired by Chris Schreiber and sponsored by Cooper's Ice Brewed Tea, will kick off at 5 p.m., on Friday, May 26, with registration and a welcome party at the St. Croix Yacht Club. The club is located at the east end of the island on Teague Bay.
Racing will begin at 9:30 a.m., on both Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and May 28. A "Pirates Party" is planned for 5 p.m., on Saturday, and awards will be presented at 3:30 p.m., Sunday. Prizes will be awarded for the first three places in each class. In the Optimist Class, prizes will be awarded in Green, Red, White, and Blue fleets as well as the top three overall.
Classes will include Optimist, Sunfish, Laser, Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, and 420. Entries of three or more boats will constitute a class. All competitors must be members of U.S. Sailing, or their Member National Authority, or be members of a community sailing program or yacht club.
The entry fee will be $40 per boat before May 20 and $60 thereafter. Boat charter fees are $50 for Optimist, $50 for Sunfish, and $80 for 420. Lasers are not available for charter. A damage deposit of $200 is refundable at the end of the regatta.
Competitors may register in advance by downloading and completing the entry form and mailing, delivering, or faxing it to the St. Croix Yacht Club.
