Center for the Arts Will Have Learn to Draw Workshops

0

June 21, 2006 – Full-time painter and St. Croix resident Jane Akin will teach six Learn to Draw Workshops from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., beginning Saturday, June 24, and every Saturday in July, (June 24, July 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29) at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, 10 Strand Street, in Frederiksted.
Students will learn to draw using props, discover the principles of design, create a personal sketchbook and develop their own style.
Week one teaches gesture and proportion–how to draw shapes quickly.
Week two focuses on line variations–how to make your mark on the paper. "A line is taking a dot for a walk," said artist Paul Klee.
Week three explains value, texture, and shadow–how to create dimension.
Week four covers foreshortening–how to draw an object straight on.
Week five centers on perspective–how to use a vanishing point.
Week six combines all techniques in depth.
Jane Akin, a former interior designer in her native Texas, likes to paint historic buildings, windows and doors, as well as plants, flowers and animals. She is one of the few artists on St. Croix who is totally supported by her art. Akin has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas, is a member of the Palletteers, shows in exhibits several times a year and teaches weekly watercolor and drawing classes at her Boetzberg studio. This is her first time teaching at the Caribbean Museum.
Pre-registration and payment is required for the Learn to Draw Workshops as class size is limited.
