Kentucky Kris Back for Revenge on Big Island

0

Nov. 24, 2006 — The horses will be off and running at the Randall "Doc" James racetrack on Sunday for the 2006 Thanksgiving races on what looks to be a well-matched 10-race card.
Sixty-nine thoroughbreds will look to answer the call to post on Sunday, with 13 coming from St. Thomas to do battle with their Crucian counterparts. Of the St. Thomas steeds, the standout is undoubtedly Kentucky Kris, who will be out for revenge in the feature race, sponsored by the gubernatorial team of dejongh/Francis 2006.
Kentucky Kris, an A-class gelding who will be carrying 118 pounds, suffered a narrow defeat in his last visit to the big island at the hands of B-class sensation, Carson Secrets, who will also be carrying 118 pounds.
The Kentucky Kris contingent, however, attributed that defeat to his long layoff prior to that race and feels now, that with a few more races under his belt, Kris will be ready to destroy anything the St. Croix track can throw at him.
The race, however, will not only be about these two. There are some other very tough campaigners, including former V.I. champ, Heart At Risk; Gallego, coming off a huge upset win over Heart at Risk in his last outing; the Speedy El Chuso; Wauwinet, another one of St. Thomas top thoroughbreds; and Danzig Mon.
Set to go off at 4:30 p.m., the one and one/sixteenth-mile feature is the ninth race of the 10-race card and features a $5,000 purse.
The other race of note will be the eighth race, the Virgin Islands Bred Classic, ran at a distance of one mile for a purse of $4,000. This race is the second leg of the native bred Triple Crown, which will feature exciting native filly and first-leg winner, Guavaberry Star.
She will break from the inside post in gate one carrying 113 pounds. Her top competition should come from the two outside horses and former native champs, All Eyes on Me and Geepers Creepers.
Rounding out the field in the native Classic will be Shysie, Wild Wisdom and Danias Weapon. Word around the barn is one of the latter three thoroughbreds is primed to run a huge race and that there could be an upset of enormous proportion.
